Lucy Caldwell’s career
Caldwell, an Irish playwright and novelist, is the winner of the BBC’s National Short Story Award 2021. She has described her birth year, when the hunger strike first began, as a during the darkest and most turbulent Trouble years. By this time, Bobby Sands and nine others had also passed away, and it seemed like things had completely spiraled out of control.
Caldwell attended Strathearn School before enrolling at Cambridge’s Queens College. She earned a First Class Degree there before enrolling at London’s Goldsmiths College. She later said that she loved the city, loved the streets, and was happy to live there before leaving what she always found “boring, introverted” in 1999.
Her debut short play, The River, was premiered in June 2004 at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and later at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. She received the PMA Most Promising Playwright Award for her play. Plus, she worked with the National Theater in 2005 as a screenwriter.
She later won the 2006 George Devine Award, the 2007 Susan Smith Blackburn Award, and the BBC Stewart Parker Award for her soap opera Leaves. The work was created in 2007 by the Druid Theater Company under the direction of Garry Hynes. Galway staged the play’s world premiere before it was moved to the Royal Court Theatre.
Going forward, Guardians, her second complete play, premiered at the 2009 HighTide Festival in Halesworth. Michael Billington, a critic who gave the play a positive review, said that she was struck by his writing about lost love, which has real power. The Birmingham Repertory Theater staged a production of her book, Notes to Future Self, in March 2011. The stage called it “brave, elegant, and quite astonishing” and Rachel Kavanaugh is the director.
Her debut book, Where They Were Missing, which takes place in Belfast and County Donegal, was released in February 2006. The 2006 Dylan Thomas Prize shortlist includes this novel. Additionally, Vofue called it “an premiere reminiscent of Trezza Azzopardi’s The Hidden Place and Ian McEwan’s The Cement Garden.
Then, in February 2011, Faber released his second book, The Meet Point, about a young Irish missionary couple to Bahrain. It was later called by the Sunday Times “engaging, moving and deeply resonant” and “haunting, must-read” by the Guardian.
This is a fascinating and moving depiction of what happens to a family when one of you goes missing. When a body is discovered, the wonderful story to be told begins and the lonely daughter returns to her family as they await identification. Girl From Mars is causing influence and tension from within. It strays from sentimentality and feels relatable and personal.
