Birmingham, AL – The University of Alabama at Birmingham is somber as it remembers and mourns the passing of 19-year-old student Will Blakely from Madison, Alabama. Will, born on December 3, 2003, in Huntsville, was a vibrant young man with an adventurous spirit and notable academic achievements.
A proud member of the Class of ’22 at James Clemens High School, Will’s passion for learning continued at UAB, where he pursued a major in Nutrition and earned a Merit Scholarship. His contributions to the UAB community began even before he started college over a year ago when he served on the front desk staff.
Known for his zest for life, Will’s adventurous spirit left a lasting impact on those around him. Whether on spontaneous road trips or exploring diverse cuisines, he turned every experience into a memorable one.
In addition to his charismatic personality, Will connected effortlessly with people from various backgrounds, engaging in philanthropy and dedicating significant time to causes close to his heart. He volunteered at local charities and initiated projects for positive change.
Will Blakely is survived by his parents, Jonathan and Christina, siblings Luke, Emily, and Jesse, as well as grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his grandfather, Ronald Choate.
A memorial service to celebrate Will’s life will take place at Most Merciful Jesus Catholic Parish at 12 noon on Tuesday, November 14. The service will be preceded by a visitation at 11 AM, providing an opportunity for friends, family, and the UAB community to come together and remember the vibrant and adventurous spirit of Will Blakely.

Madison, AL – On Friday, November 10, William (Will) Lee Blakely, a beloved son and brother, passed away at the age of 19. Born on December 3, 2003, in Huntsville, AL, Will was a member of the Class of ’22 at James Clemens High School, majoring in Nutrition at the University of Alabama at Birmingham on a Merit Scholarship.
A talented cook, Will specialized in vegan recipes with Asian and Mexican influences. His love for exotic ingredients was well-known in ethnic grocery stores around town. Will’s affection for animals extended from raising chickens and quails as a child to working at the Athens-Limestone Animal Shelter as a teenager. Family dogs Sweet Pea and Maisy were his constant companions, offering comfort in difficult times.
Will is preceded in death by his grandfather, Ronald Choate, and is survived by his parents Jonathan and Christina, siblings Luke, Emily, and Jesse, grandparents Lee and Melanie Blakely, grandmother Rosalie Choate, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The memorial service will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, November 14, at Most Merciful Jesus Catholic Parish, preceded by a visitation at 11 AM. The family has requested remembrances in the form of contributions to the Athens-Limestone Animal Shelter.
