News Vincent Jeanbrun
During the ongoing riots in France in 2023, a terrifying event occurred when terrorists tried to set fire to the home of a Paris suburb mayor during the night and launch rockets at the officer’s wife and children. This position is on the run. The act, which is being investigated as an assassination attempt, has shocked public opinion and has been criticized by Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne of France.
The attack in L’Ha-les-Roses, south of Paris, was not witnessed by the target mayor, Vincent Jeanbrun. However, the attack also harmed one of their children and left his wife, Melanie Nowak, with a broken leg. The identities of the attackers are still unknown.
According to a BBC story, Jeanbrun testified that the assailants used a car to break through the gate of their home before setting it on fire with the intention of spreading the flames into the house. A barrage of firework rockets was fired at Nowak as she tried to flee with her 5- and 7-year-old children. Mayor Jeanbrun described the horrific incident as “a murder plot of indescribable cowardice”.
An investigation into the incident, which occurred on Sunday at 1:30 a.m. local time, has been opened by French authorities.
When police shot and killed 17-year-old Nahel M while checking traffic, there were violent protests across France for the seventh consecutive night. This provoked an attack on Mayor Jeanbrun’s mansion. A total of 45,000 police were dispatched to keep the peace during the protests as tensions rose. Compared to other days, Saturday night was said to be quieter, with fewer total arrests, according to the Interior Ministry.
Officials verified that more than 800 fires were started by rioters overnight and more than 700 people were arrested nationwide as a result of the unrest.
Mayor Jeanbrun has called on the French government to declare a state of emergency in response to the disturbances before the incident. However, President Emmanuel Macron has yet to take such steps. The president will then meet with senior officials to discuss the growing issue.
Concerns about the increased level of violence and its impact on public safety have been heightened by the attack on the mayor’s mansion and the injuries to his wife and child. In a show of support for Mayor Jeanbrun, Prime Minister Borne called the move “unforgivable”, echoing the comments of other leaders from different political parties.
