Teen injured in Hempstead High School shooting, suspect arrested

Law enforcement and emergency responders rushed to Hempstead, New York, today, following reports of a shooting near Hempstead High School. The Hempstead Police Department dispatched officers to the school’s vicinity on Tyler Street, responding to reported gunfire outside the campus premises located at 201 President St, Hempstead, NY.

While unconfirmed reports suggest a student might have been shot, authorities have not officially verified these claims. Concerned individuals took to social media, sharing the distressing news and urging prayers for the students while awaiting further information. “NEW INFO: The Waller County Sheriff confirmed to me that 31-year-old Devin Rhodes has been charged for murder in the shooting death of Ken Wilder, Sr. at Prairie View A&M University’s goat farm.“Ken was a husband, father, former Hempstead High School football player and PVAMU alum. He was called a “bright spot” by one friend, who was deeply involved in youth sports. Shelley Childers ABC13 will have more on him tonight at 6.”

Authorities have advised people to avoid the area as investigations into the incident are underway. Hempstead High School, the only high school within the Hempstead Union Free School District, has an enrollment of approximately 2,226 students, with a teacher-student ratio of 19.2:1 as of the 2014–15 academic year. Notably, in the early 20th century, students from neighboring areas such as East Meadow, Roosevelt, Uniondale, and West Hempstead attended Hempstead High School alongside Hempstead Village students.
