A week after casting Maia Kealoha as Lilo, the live-action film Lilo & Stitch is said to have cast Sydney Agudong as Nani, Lilo’s older sister. Agudong, a native of Kaua’i, Hawaii, is an actress relatively new to the stage and primarily acts in independent films.
In addition to appearing as Charlize in the fourth season of Netflix’s On My Block, the 23-year-old also starred in the coming-of-age drama West Michigan on Amazon-iTunes. Indie films like At Your Feet (unreleased) and Infamous in Love also landed her in notable roles. Meanwhile, the Lilo & Stitch adaptation will be Kealoha’s feature film debut.
Following The Hollywood Reporter’s revelation about Agudong’s casting, outraged fans suggested that Disney+, the production company that supported the live-action, was promoting “colorism”. This is most likely due to the fact that Nani Pelekai’s character has a dark complexion, which contrasts with Agudong’s skin tone.
In addition to those named above, Zach Galifianakis from The Hangover was brought on board this February, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter at the time. Not sure what he’ll do in the new Lilo & Stitch.
Billy Magnussen, known for his roles in No Time to Die and The Many Saints of Newark, is a cast member in the next Lilo & Stitch film. The details of his personality are also kept private.
The Hollywood Reporter exclusively reported on the recruitment of Agudong on Thursday, April 13, 2023, mentioning that she had just finished filming At Your Feet. Notably, neither Disney+ nor anyone involved with the Lilo & Stitch remake has acknowledged her involvement. However, fans also expressed their displeasure on Twitter. According to them, it is “colorism” and Agudong’s features do not match Nani Pelekai’s appearance.
However, a part of netizens also defended the young actress. They advised the attackers to ignore her physical features and focus on her Hawaiian ancestry.
A live-action adaptation was officially announced in October 2018 with producers Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich from Rideback (formerly known as Lin Pictures). Originally, Mike Van Waes was expected to write the adaptation; but, according to current reports, Chris Kekaniokalani Bright will do so instead.
Dean Fleischer Camp will direct the next film. For the 2021 release of Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, Camp Fleischer was nominated for an Academy Award in the category of Best Animated Feature at the 95th Academy Awards.
