The next morning, when their mother didn’t come home the night before, the children found Gene dozing off on the couch. The 58-year-old contractor later announced his estranged wife was missing and moved in with the children. Despite the fact that Dianne had been away for months, their house burned down in a fire the following January while all the children were still inside.

The youngest daughter Lori Romaneck, 5, and her son barely escaped the fire, surviving the tragedy. Their two children died in the fire. While her brother managed to escape unharmed, the older brother suffered severe burns. Although the fire was deemed “suspicious”, no charges were made.

Dianne and Gene Keidel’s surviving daughter, Lori Romaneck, appeared in 1993 and claimed that her father had murdered their mother years earlier. This was nearly three decades earlier. Reports say 27 years after Dianne was declared missing, she wrote to Phoenix Police.

Lori claimed in the letter that she saw her father hit her mother on the head. She testified that after witnessing her mother fall to the ground, Gene hit her in the head again. She discovered her mother “curled up on the pool floor” that evening while her father was digging a hole in the backyard.
