Santa Paula fire update: Evacuation map amid Ventura County wildfire, 2,400 acres burned

Ventura County firefighters battled a raging brush fire on South Mountain near the 118 and 126 freeways, fueled by intense Santa Ana winds. The fire, named the South Fire, began around 9:38 a.m., rapidly expanding from an initial report of three to four acres to a staggering 2,444 acres by 6:15 p.m.

Andrew Dowd, Ventura County Fire Department spokesperson, highlighted the relentless efforts of over 100 firefighters utilizing ground and aerial support amidst challenging conditions. Despite the weather slightly easing, crews remain vigilant, aided by night-vision-equipped helicopters and teams.

Evacuation orders were issued for East La Loma Avenue, West La Loma Avenue, East Los Angeles Avenue, Aggen Road, La Vista Avenue, and areas surrounding Mission Rock Road and Saticoy Country Club. Additionally, temporary shelters were established at Ventura Community College, catering to evacuees affected by power outages impacting over 5,000 households.

Meanwhile, in Riverside County, firefighters tackled a 65-acre vegetation fire in Cabazon, with containment reaching 15% by the afternoon. The National Weather Service issued red-flag warnings for Ventura and Los Angeles counties due to anticipated high winds and low humidity.

A temporary shelter has been established at the campus gym of the Ventura Community College on West Campus Way at 4667 Telegraph Road Ventura, CA 93003, according to the Red Cross of Central California.

Officials advised caution and readiness, emphasizing preparedness measures for evacuating residents and urged travelers to seek alternate routes and avoid State Route 118 west of Moorpark in the Somis area.
