A West Townshend woman, Hope Schreiner, convicted of the tragic murder of her elderly husband, Robert Schreiner, in 2004, has recently passed away due to a terminal or debilitating illness, bringing an end to a distressing saga that began almost two decades ago.
Schreiner, who was found guilty of second-degree murder in 2006, had been grappling with health issues while serving her sentence. Her freedom was granted via a medical furlough, permitting her to move from incarceration to a northern Vermont nursing home, making her the oldest female prisoner in the state and the second-oldest inmate in detention.
Her sentence, 17 years to life, was issued in connection with the death of her 78-year-old husband, Robert, who suffered fatal injuries from blunt force trauma to the head. Although the murder weapon, presumed to be a potato hoe, was never recovered, evidence during the trial suggested it as the likely instrument.
Despite her release on medical grounds, Schreiner was under supervision and was not eligible for release until March 2023. The Department of Corrections, in collaboration with the Parole Board and Robert Schreiner’s family, arranged her medical furlough to an approved nursing facility.
The circumstances leading to Robert’s tragic demise were brought to light during the trial, revealing an extramarital affair and alleged statements from Hope about the incident to acquaintances. This story of marital strife and tragedy unfolded after 43 years of marriage, during which the couple, both having children from previous marriages, built a life together in Vermont, overcoming various challenges in their later years.
Amidst health complications stemming from a near-fatal accident and multiple ailments, Robert’s life ended abruptly, marked by a distressing incident that altered the course of their seemingly contented life together.
Schreiner’s passing signifies the conclusion of a saga marked by legal proceedings, family grief, and a controversial case that captivated the local community’s attention. Despite the jury’s verdict and subsequent legal actions, the mystery surrounding that fateful day in June 2004, when Robert was found lifeless in their driveway, remains unresolved.
Hope Schreiner’s recent passing brings a closure of sorts to this tragic chapter, leaving behind unanswered questions about the events leading to Robert’s untimely demise and the complicated web of emotions and circumstances that surrounded the couple’s life in their later years.
