Olympic Training Center athlete ambassador Geoffrey Geoff Corrigan dies at 41: obituary

Michigan, USA – December 6, 2023: The gymnastics world is grieving the passing of Geoff Corrigan, the esteemed former Assistant Coach of Men’s Gymnastics at the University of Michigan. Geoff Corrigan, a former professional athlete at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, breathed his last on December 6 at the age of 41, leaving behind a legacy cherished by many in the gymnastics community.

Geoffrey, born on November 25, 1982, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, shared a deep bond with his late grandmother, Margie “Gran” Corrigan, and fostered enduring childhood friendships with Russell, Beau, Rocky, and Ben.

A graduate of the University of Michigan in 2005, Geoffrey showcased exceptional prowess in gymnastics, earning All-American status on the parallel bars and leading the team as captain during the 2004-05 season.

His journey continued at the U.S. Olympic Training Center under the guidance of Vitaly Marinich, where he secured seventh place in the all-around at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships and claimed a spot on the U.S. Senior National Team. In 2008, he served as the athlete ambassador at the Olympic Training Center.

Geoffrey’s impactful career spanned an 11-season tenure as Assistant Coach for the University of Michigan’s Men’s Gymnastics Team. Renowned for his competitive spirit, humor, and charisma, Geoff became a mentor and friend to many. He played an instrumental role in the team’s consecutive NCAA and Big Ten Championship victories, earning recognition with the 2013-14 CGA Regional Assistant Coach of the Year award.

Beyond coaching, Geoff’s influence extended to international gymnastics events, coaching Syque Caesar in the World Championships and Commonwealth Games. He led the Bengali National Team alongside Syque at the 2012 London Olympic Games. In recent years, Geoff transitioned to a career in 3D manufacturing as an account manager for Proto3000, where his humor and camaraderie brightened the workplace.

Survived by his deeply cherished children, William Corrigan (7) and Evelyn Corrigan (4), Geoffrey is also survived by his mother Kim Matheny, brother Brandon Matheny, and sister Brooke Matheny of Colorado Springs, CO.

His ex-wife, Rachel Corrigan, remained a supportive part of his life despite their separate paths. His enduring relationships reflected his captivating personality, showcasing his character’s strength and unwavering commitment to his loved ones.

A Celebration of Life honoring Geoffrey Corrigan will take place on January 21, 2024, at 10:00 AM at U of M – Sports Coliseum, a venue that held significance in his gymnastics journey.

This gathering aims to provide a platform for those touched by Geoffrey to share memories, offer condolences, and commemorate a life that left an indelible mark on many.
