News Lucy Martin
Lucy Martin, the BBC’s first apparently disabled weather presenter, was born without a forearm and right hand. She joined a BBC program in 2015 that gave people with disabilities interested in the weather and the environment the opportunity to learn more about the profession. After the three-day show, Lucy got the chance to begin her training as a weather presenter.
Lucy was interviewed by Emma Purcell, one of our regular writers, to learn more about how she got the job, the highs and lows of her presentation, and her disability. How it has affected her personal and professional life.
I follow my friends’ lead in whatever they do and I never feel like it’s holding me back. I did a lot of dancing and acting, as well as cycling and swimming. At daycare, I used to chop up other kids’ food and tie their shoelaces because maybe I was too good at it.
My family simply anticipated that I would move forward and not back down. I believe that has greatly influenced my outlook on life. We are also part of the nonprofit Reach, which helps children with upper limb deformities. It’s amazing how I connect with so many other kids with similar interests thanks to the charity.
I was fitted with a movable prosthetic hand when I was in elementary school. I had to make an appointment to learn how to use it before I could bring it home. When I get home, I bring it to school and show the whole school what I’ve done. However, the next day, I decided I didn’t want to bring it to school anymore because it was too heavy and I didn’t think I needed it.
There’s a lot more to a weather report than may appear at first. This session is really demanding. There are several different sessions, including storytelling and voice training. I had a meeting with a mentor to get advice on how to get through the day and learn more about work. In addition, I also had the opportunity to interact with makeup artists and practice presentations in the studio.
