Amanda Anisimova, an American tennis player, and her sister Maria also excelled at tennis, however, Maria did not pursue it professionally. Both sportsmen began playing tennis as children and have always been supportive of one another. Maria Egee, Amanda’s sister, is now a well-known figure in the financial business.
Amanda Anisimova was born on August 31, 2001, in Freehold Township, New Jersey. Anisimova, who has been interested in tennis since she was five years old, had a career-high ITF junior rating of No. 2 in the world in 2016. During the early phases of her junior career, she entered the 2015 Abierto Juvenil Mexicano ranked outside of the top 300. Nonetheless, she surprised everyone by winning the high-level Grade A event at the age of fourteen.
In the middle of 2016, Anisimova received a wildcard into the US Open qualifying competition, her first professional tournament. She won her debut against world No. 124 Verónica Cepede Royg when she was 14 years old, but was beaten in the next round. Later, in her debut competition as a 17-year-old, she qualified for the main draw and made her maiden WTA final.
Meet Amanda Anisimova Sister: Maria Egee.
Maria, the player’s older sister, has similar tennis talents to Anisimova. The sisters have a strong affinity with one another. Maria attended Wharton’s undergraduate business school and played collegiate tennis for the University of Pennsylvania. Maria Egee, a prominent player in the financial world, also works as Director of Credit Trading at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Similarly, the 35-year-old ranked 11th on the 2018 “30 Under 30: Finance” list.
In addition to her contributions to the banking profession, Egee is married and has two boys. Maria’s impact extends beyond the tennis court, where she serves as Amanda’s mentor and confidante. Amanda credits her sister for inspiring her to take up the sport, adding, “When I was small, Mom used to play tennis. I constantly watched her playing and longed to join in. That’s how I got into it, and so did my folks.
Prioritizing Mental Health
Anisimova dubbed the “next big thing” in women’s tennis due to rising public expectations, suffered a slew of problems that weighed heavily on her mental health. Furthermore, with the unexpected death of her coach and father in 2019, she may have felt even more burdened by expectations. Last May, she took an extended vacation from tennis, citing exhaustion as one of the reasons.
Furthermore, in her Instagram post, she said,
“At this moment, my focus is my mental health and taking a vacation for a while. I’ve worked as hard as I could to get through this.”
Earlier this month, she returned to the WTA Tour, reaching the second round in Auckland and winning her opening round match. Anisimova said after her triumph how fortunate she felt to prioritize her mental health above her work. Likewise, she said that the hiatus has given her a new perspective on life, which she believes would help her when she returns to the tour.
