Lois Fowler obituary: Retired Canadian Curling Legend passes away at age 68 in Brandon, MB

In a somber moment for the Canadian curling community, retired curling icon Lois Fowler, hailing from Brandon, Manitoba, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 28th, 2023, at the age of 68, surrounded by her loving family. Curling Canada officially confirmed her demise on Friday, extending their deepest condolences to her friends and family.

Fowler’s illustrious career was marked by her exceptional achievements, notably clinching the Manitoba provincial championships four times. Her journey began in 1993 when she was the third member of the Maureen Bonar rink. During the 1993 Scott Tournament of Hearts, held in her hometown of Brandon, Fowler’s team emerged impressively from the round-robin stage, securing second place with an 8-3 record.

In 1996, Fowler took on the role of lead stones thrower for the Bonar rink. Despite a six-way tie for fourth place after the round-robin stage, Fowler’s team faced disappointment in the tiebreaker against the Connie Laliberte rink, ending Manitoba’s tournament journey that year.

Fowler’s leadership skills shone in 1998 when she skippered her own rink at the Scott Tournament of Hearts. Unfortunately, her team missed the playoffs with a 4-7 record. A similar fate awaited her in 2004 when her team secured a 7-4 round-robin record, tying for fourth place with Saskatchewan’s Sherry Anderson rink.

She claimed the provincial senior women’s title in 2009 and repeated her success in 2013 with a new lineup featuring Wooley, Manning, and lead Joan Robertson. The 2013 Canadian Senior Curling Championships saw her team achieve a 7-4 round-robin record, tying for third place with Quebec’s Catherine Derick rink.

The exact cause of Fowler’s passing remains unknown at this time. The curling community mourns the loss of a true legend whose contributions to the sport will always be remembered. Our thoughts are with her family and friends during this difficult time.
