Garnet Valley Jaguar Bands posted on Facebook,

“The world lost a giant of jazz this week. The great Larry McKenna was a household name in the Philly jazz community. EVERYONE knew him and loved him, not only for his stunning saxophone playing and amazing compositions, but also for his gentle, kind, and incredibly generous spirit. He was a mentor and teacher to countless musicians in the greater Philly area and beyond.

“We in the Garnet Valley Band program had the honor to have Larry visit and perform with our students twice. In 2014, we presented Larry with a “Jazz Legend” award and he performed with our middle school jazz band. In 2022, Larry honored us by composing a new chart “Hangin’ With Uncle Joe” which the GVHS Jazz Band premiered with Larry as guest soloist. While we are so saddened to see this legend leave us, we celebrate his legacy of spreading the joy of jazz and jazz education to all. We miss you Larry, and we thank you. @garnetvalleyschooldistrict @garnetvalleyhs @mrskynettmusic”
