A musician performing in The Lion King missed out on a huge payout despite starring in one of the most successful Disney movies of all time.
Young Simba’s voice actor Jason Weaver initially turned down $2 million (£1.6 million) in favor of royalties. However, Weaver quickly realized his reward as songs like “Hakuna Matata” and “I Just Can’t Wait to be King” topped the charts and earned millions of dollars.
The Lion King will become the best-selling animated film ever, and the Oscar-winning soundtrack will go on to sell 18 million copies in the US alone. Weaver’s mother advised him to cut his income, but he first agreed to Disney’s offer after talking with her.
