Ione Wells News
A child who was arrested for sexually assaulting a student wrote an open letter about her experience. Ione Wells, a 20-year-old student at Oxford University, was attacked last month while she was home in the Camden area. The unidentified 17-year-old received a two-year juvenile detention sentence at Highbury Corner Magistrates Court.
After admitting to sexual assault at a previous hearing, he was told he would serve the first half of his sentence while on probation. The minor will also spend 5 years on the sex offenders list. He allegedly grabbed Ms Wells from behind during the hearing and shoved her to the ground, causing her to hit her head on concrete.
Then he roughly grabbed her breasts, ripping her bra in half. Ms Wells described the attack as the most horrific event of her life and how it made her feel “unclean and violated” in a victim impact statement. She claimed to have experienced flashbacks and heard footsteps.
The 17-year-old’s defense attorney asked for leniency, saying the young man “deeply regrets” the attack and is “ready to prove” it will be his last.
However, the judge determined that detention was necessary because the assault was so gruesome and would have lasting psychological effects on Ms. Wells.
The outraged letter to her assailant was first published by Ms Wells in the student newspaper Cherwell after she gave up her right to remain anonymous to discuss the attack. She claims that the supportive comments she received have “transformed” into an “extremely painful” experience.
“My community will not feel that it is unsafe for us to walk home after dark,” she said. We will not accept or endorse the notion that taking the last subway ride home puts us in danger. Instead, we would get in the car ourselves and walk the streets. Even if you don’t always notice it, your community is there. It is present. It is popular.
After being attacked and her letter published, Ms Wells started the #NotGuilty campaign to promote the idea that sexual assault victims should never be held accountable.
