Love is without a doubt one of the highlights of Hugh Grant’s career, largely thanks to the legendary dance his character performs in the song Jump. One intriguing detail about the film is that the actor is “extremely annoyed” with the scene and hesitant to do it. The British actor said in an ABC News flashback program titled Laughter & Secrets of True Love: 20 Years Later that after reading the script, he was “not interested in performing dances at all”. Richard Curtis, the director of the modern-day Christmas classic, agreed and quipped that “a contract guillotine” forced Grant to shoot the scene.

In Love Actually, the London native plays David, a newly elected Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He eventually falls in love with Natalie (Martine McCutcheon), a young Downing Street employee. The dance scene occurs after David appropriately responds to the President of the United States (Billy Bob Thornton) earlier in the day. To commemorate David, a radio station broadcasts Jump by The Pointer Sisters (which won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals in 1985).
When he heard the music, the young Prime Minister jumped into an unplanned dance in the hallway of his official home. Natalie entered and interrupted him. This particular sequence of events has now become a memorable cinematic event.
Grant describes the dance routine as “the most painful moment ever.”
When the host of the special, renowned TV journalist Diane Sawyer, asked Grant about the script, he replied:
“When I read that in the script, I thought to myself, ‘Wow, I hate doing that’.”
The actor still decried the scene, describing it as “the most horrible scene ever made with a movie.”
He continued:
“To this day, many people, and I agree with them, believe it was the most painful scene ever put on film.” However, some individuals like it.”
Meanwhile, Curtis revealed that Grant “repeatedly said ‘no'” and joked that the actor was “grumpy” on the day the scene was filmed.
He stated the following:
“I think he was hoping I was sick or something and we would say, ‘Oh, what a pity, we’re going to have to drop that dance scene,'” she said.
He went on to say that watching Grant dance was “horribly embarrassing,” but “he was just perfect.”
Grant, who appeared as a guest in the Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery murder mystery, joined in and pointed out:
“By the way, I’m out of step. Especially when I’m rocking my ** at the start.
It should be noted that the fact that Natalie barged in and interrupted David’s dance was the actor’s idea.
