Seattle, WA – Garfield High School in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood went into lockdown following an altercation that escalated to shots fired behind the campus. The incident prompted a massive police response and heightened security measures on Wednesday afternoon.
Around 12:15 PM, police responded to a reported fight disturbance near the school’s football field. Subsequently, shots were fired in the vicinity, and shell casings were found near Martin Luther King Jr. Way and Alder Street. A nearby house also reported property damage due to gunfire.
The school initiated a shelter-in-place protocol, and a message was sent to students’ families, informing them that dismissal would only occur once the shelter-in-place was lifted. The incident disrupted the usual lunchtime routine, with many students on their way out of campus.
According to school officials, the altercation began as a conflict between two students, leading to the involvement of their respective families. However, it was stressed that this incident was not a direct threat to the school.
While the incident initiated a lockdown at Garfield High School and neighboring facilities, it’s important to note that the altercation and subsequent gun violence primarily involved the families and not the broader school community.
The police are actively searching for multiple vehicles related to the incident, and a 17-year-old male was treated for minor injuries. Further investigations are ongoing to determine the details surrounding the assault and gunfire. The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and security of students and staff in educational institutions.
