Famous veterinarian Amy Haraway dies in Austin: Obituary

The veterinary community and beyond are mourning the loss of Dr. Amy Haraway, a renowned veterinarian known for her caring and wonderful nature. Dr. Haraway passed away on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and dedication to both animals and people.

A force of nature with a big caring heart, Dr. Amy Haraway was more than just an amazing doctor and colleague; she was an extraordinary human being who made a lasting difference in the world. Her warm smile, incredible honesty, and lively presence endeared her to all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Dr. Haraway’s passing was announced by the Austin Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Center, where she was a beloved member of the AVES family. In a statement, they expressed the deep sense of loss and the impact Dr. Haraway had on the hearts of many.

The statement from AVES read: “Yesterday our team experienced a tragic loss of our close colleague and friend. Dr. Amy Haraway was a beloved member of the AVES family who touched the hearts of so many people and animals during her time with us. Her warm smile and presence will be greatly missed but never forgotten.”

To honor her life and the profound impact she made, a vigil will be held at the Austin Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Center on December 21 at 5:30 PM. The event is open to everyone who wishes to pay their respects and share memories of Dr. Haraway.

Dr. Amy Haraway earned her veterinary degree from Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2004. She completed a one-year Emergency and Critical Care internship at DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital in Portland, Oregon, focusing on emergency medicine, trauma, and wound care.

Her professional journey led her to Northwest Veterinary Specialists and Emergency in Portland, OR, until 2019 when she relocated to Austin to be closer to her family. In addition to her veterinary work, Dr. Haraway enjoyed spending leisure time pampering her lab cross, Eli, and engaging in activities such as reading, cooking, and playing the piano and violin.

The family will release an official obituary and details of the funeral arrangements for Dr. Amy Haraway, allowing friends, colleagues, and admirers to come together to celebrate her remarkable life and bid her a heartfelt farewell.
