Only the burned ruins on cobblestones that remain six months later are evidence of what took place. For a while, the incident sparked controversy in the German media, leading to more questions than solutions.
While it’s possible that public attention has waned since then, those who know Ella well continue to feel confused and unhappy.
Although Ella did not leave a message or an explanation, some of her closest friends believe there was no political motive behind her act of self-immolation in public, which other members of the larger transgender community see as an act of protest.
Then why would Ella perform such a desperate act? What has happened in her life since she left Iran that may have influenced her decision to commit suicide? The difficulties she encountered during the trip that culminated in Alexanderplatz holding the answers.
He is a very shy and gentle man. He was always grinning, as Edna Pevestorf recalls.
In Magdeburg, a former East German city where the anti-immigrant Alternative fuer Deutschland party gained significant support in the most recent election, Ella first met Edna, a social work coordinator.
She is transgender, meaning she did not identify the gender assigned to her at birth. She arrived in Germany in 2015 and like many other LGBTQ immigrants, her journey has not been without challenges.
He left Iran illegally four years ago and entered Germany via Turkey, a popular route for Iranian migrants as they are not required to have an entry visa.
At first, Ella hid her gender identity, and it took her nearly a year to begin asking some of her casework questions.
According to Edna, “She asked if it was legal to live here as a gay person, if it was okay. She came to the German class I was teaching. That was the first time I admitted to myself that I had a problem.
However, she is not gay. She has learned to hide who she is and how she feels about herself, like many LGBTQ+ people in Iran, for fear of being attacked and put on trial.
She had little access to knowledge of gender identity and sexual orientation while growing up in a conservative religious family in southern Iran. It was hard for Ella to come out as transgender, and Edna recalls one particular conversation that took place one fall day in 2016.
He said he needed to talk about something when he came to my office. I’m not gay, but I want to be a lady, he told me. Ella mainly thought about how she could live as a transgender woman during their two-hour conversation.
In December 2016, a few months later, Ella returned to Edna’s workplace.
“Apart from the nail polish on her left finger, she’s nothing new.” It’s the first of many small measures Ella will take to change.
With people she felt safe around, such as Edna or Lisa Schulz, whom she became close friends with while assisting immigrants at a community center in Magdeburg, Ella slowly began to reveal her sexuality.
Ella is an optimistic, cheerful person and quickly makes friends in Lisa’s memory.
At the center, Ella and I met. She originally went there to learn German. However, she ended up being a great interpreter for us, which was quite helpful. She is fluent in 5 languages: Farsi, Arabic, Turkish, German and English. She is a very lovely person. useful.”
“She was always Ella, but at first she didn’t look like the Ella we know now,” explains Lisa, referring to her gender expression. It involves a process.
a procedure that has not been fully conducted for more than a year.
According to Lisa, she also assisted in a community garden: “She was always out in the field planting potatoes or whatever, wearing a miniskirt and heels.”
However, Ella is not always in a safe environment. Lisa and Edna claim that she was threatened and harassed in public.
According to Lisa, everywhere she went, she was the subject of conversation and sometimes scolded. “She just wants to be accepted for who she is, and people don’t accept that.”
Michael, Ella’s friend in Magdeburg, recalls an incident where a group of young men attacked her on a train.
