John Mackey was born in Houston, Texas on August 15, 1953, to Margaret Wescott (Powell) and William Sturges “Bill” Mackey, Jr. He has a sister and a brother.
Bill Mackey, John’s father, was an accounting educator, CEO of LifeMark, a human services organization, and a Whole Foods Market speculator before his death in 2004. According to the book Conscious Capitalism, Mackey thanks his father for teaching him important life lessons.
Margaret Mackey, John’s mother, died in 198 when he was 34 years old. John and Margaret have a strained relationship, which is exacerbated by her desire for a different future for her children. In 1978, Mackey helped found his first health nutrition store, SaferWay, in Austin with his wife, Renee Lawson (Hardy). They met while living in a vegetarian accommodation. They dropped out of high school.
They received $10,000 and raised another $35,000 to launch SaferWay. Austin at the time had a few health food stores. Both run a market on the first floor, a health and nutrition cafe on the second, and lived on the third floor of their house for a short time. They merged SaferWay with Clarksville Natural Grocery, run by Mark Skiles and Craig Weller, and renamed the company Whole Foods Market in less than two years. Each of the four (Mackey, Hardy-Lawson, Skiles and Weller) are considered business partners.
Mackey merged Whole Foods with a global corporation, with locations in major markets across the country, including Canada and the United Kingdom. Along the way, he acquired smaller competitors. Whole Foods purchased a major grocery store competitor, Wild Oats Markets, Inc., in 2007.
Mackey sits on the boards of several charities, including Students for Freedom, Global Animal Partnership, Conscious Capitalism, and the Humane Society of the United States.
