Canadian retail industry veteran and Chairman Emeritus of Sobeys Inc., David F. Sobey, passed away on September 18, 2023, at the age of 92. David played a pivotal role in leading Sobeys, one of Canada’s “big three” supermarket retailers, to remarkable growth and success.
Empire Co. Ltd., the parent company of Sobeys Inc., made the announcement of David Sobey’s passing, highlighting his immense contribution to the retail sector in Canada. Under his guidance, Sobeys evolved from a regional grocery chain to a national food retailing and distribution business, serving millions of Canadians weekly.
David Sobey, along with his brothers Bill and Donald, began their journey in the grocery business at a young age, gaining extensive experience and knowledge as they worked various roles in their family’s expanding business. This early exposure laid the foundation for David’s lifelong passion for the grocery industry.
His career in the family business saw him rise through senior leadership positions, culminating in roles such as CEO and Chairman of Sobeys Inc. During his tenure, he focused on continuous improvement and better ways to serve customers, deeply respecting those he served.
David Sobey was not only a successful businessman but also a philanthropist committed to helping those in need. He advocated for the growth and development of Atlantic Canada, Nova Scotia, and Pictou County, generously contributing his time, energy, and resources to various causes and community organizations. He was particularly devoted to supporting access to post-secondary education for young Atlantic Canadians.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions, David received numerous accolades, including being appointed a Knight of the Golden Pencil and receiving the Distinguished Canadian Retailer of the Year Award. He was also honored with multiple degrees of Doctor from esteemed universities and was awarded the Order of Canada.

To commemorate the passing of David Frank Sobey, the family will receive visitors at Crombie House, 1780 Abercrombie Road, New Glasgow Monday, September 25, 2023 between the hours of 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
A celebration of life to commemorate David’s passing will take place at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at the Trinity United Church, 151, Temperance Street, New Glasgow Nova Scotia. Trinity United Church will host David’s family and as many friends as space permits.
All other of David’s many friends and associates are welcomed at the First Presbyterian Church, adjacent to Trinity United Church for live streaming of the service. Family parking only at the churches. A shuttle will be available to/from the Aberdeen Business Centre, 610 East River Road, New Glasgow for all guests.
Guests should plan to arrive at the Aberdeen Centre by 12:00 noon, to ensure timely arrival. Those wishing to self-park the Glasgow Square and Farmers Market lots will be available.
