The FBI and federal prosecutors are investigating the police shooting death of 17-year-old Dalaneo Martin by an officer in Washington, DC, last month after the teen was found sleeping in a vehicle believed to stolen. The United States Attorney’s office in Washington released a statement saying, ‘The loss of a life is always tragic but especially heartbreaking when it involves a child.’
The bodycam video released by the US Park Police and the Washington Metropolitan Police on Tuesday was described as ‘extremely upsetting’. The investigation is ongoing and the U.S. Attorney’s Office has opened a civil rights investigation into the circumstances that led to Martin’s death, in coordination with the FBI’s Washington Field Office.

The release of the videos comes amid intense national scrutiny of police use of force. Officers from both the Parks Police and the Metropolitan Police were responding to reports of a stolen vehicle when Martin’s shooting occurred. Several officers from both agencies arrived and began discussing how to approach the situation.
As the officers strategize, one officer is heard saying to another, ‘Once you break it, he’ll wake up, start it up, and give it a drive. We don’t want anyone to get hurt.’
Footage shows officers trying to pull the driver out of the vehicle, and the vehicle then abruptly drives away with a Park Police officer still in the back seat. The officer shouted, ‘Stop. Stop or I’ll shoot!’
The driver failed to comply, and the officer opened fire. Seconds later, the car rammed into a house and officers pulled the driver out of the vehicle, who was identified as Martin. Martin died at the scene and a gun was found inside the vehicle.
