Chris Asare-Budu Atlee High School student dies in deadly train accident

Mechanicsville, VA – A somber atmosphere envelops Atlee High School and the community of Mechanicsville as news emerges of a tragic train accident that claimed the life of 15-year-old Chris Asare-Budu on Wednesday, November 29, 2023. The heartbreaking incident occurred near Atlee High School around 7:58 a.m. when Chris, a 10th-grader at Atlee, was struck by a freight train.

According to reports, the Hanover County emergency communications received a report from Buckingham Branch Railroad, alerting authorities that a pedestrian had been hit on the tracks close to the Cool Spring West development, just west of the crossing of Cool Spring Road.

Hanover County Sheriff’s officers and rescue responders swiftly located the victim, Chris Asare-Budu, at the scene. Tragically, he was pronounced dead on-site, leaving the community in shock and grief.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation by authorities as they work to piece together the details of the tragedy.

Atlee High School Principal John Wheeler shared the heartbreaking news with families, faculty, and staff in an email, expressing the school’s deep sorrow at the loss of Chris Asare-Budu. The 10th-grader’s passing is described as a result of a “tragic incident.”

Atlee High School, ranked 39th in Virginia, is known for providing students with opportunities for Advanced Placement® coursework and exams. With a 47% AP® participation rate, the school has a total minority enrollment of 19%, and 11% of students are economically disadvantaged. Atlee High School is one of four high schools in the Hanover County Public Schools.

The Atlee community now grapples with the profound loss of a young life, offering support to one another during this challenging time. Authorities continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
