The comedy-drama “Breaking News in Yuba County” starring Allison Janney has been acquired by MGM, which will distribute the film on January 29, 2021 under the newly rebranded American International Pictures banner .
In the film, Janney plays an underrated pencil pusher who discovers her husband’s affair with another woman, leading to his death from a heart attack. The character played by Janney interjects into his body and capitalizes on his growing popularity due to having a missing husband.
But as she struggles to hide the truth from the stubborn local policewoman (Regina Hall), her frantic local news host (Mila Kunis) and her half-sister (Mila Kunis) , she quickly realized she was inside her head.
The cast also includes Wanda Sykes, Clifton Collins Jr., Jimmi Simpson, Samira Wiley, Ellen Barkin, Awkwafina, Matthew Modine and Juliette Lewis. The film is directed by Tate Taylor from a screenplay by Amanda Idoko.
“Tate has made a movie that is highly entertaining,” said Chris Ottinger, MGM’s president of global television distribution and acquisitions. “We’re thrilled to be partnering with him and AGC Studios to bring it to audiences in January.”
AGC Studios, in partnership with Ingenious Media and Fibonacci Films, financed the film. AGC Studios, Taylor, Franklin Leonard’s The Black List, Jake Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker under their Nine Stories franchise, and John Norris is producing. Stuart Ford, president and CEO of AGC, Miguel Palos Jr., COO of AGC, Annie Marter, Greg Shapiro, Greg Clark, Victoria Hill, Amit Pandya, Stephen Spence, Robin Mulcahy Fisichella, Allison Janney and Amanda Idoko of Nine Stories are executive producer.
Sam Wollman, Ford and Anant Tamirisa of AGC negotiated the agreement on behalf of MGM. In the 1950s, American International Pictures was established as a privately held film production and distribution business.
