Born on October 11, 1937, in Ashington, Northumberland, England, Charlton’s roots traced back to a family deeply ingrained in the coal mining community. His parents, Robert “Bob” Charlton, a diligent coal miner, and Elizabeth Ellen “Cissie” Charlton, a compassionate nurse, shaped his early upbringing. While his father passed away in April 1982, his mother followed in March 1996, leaving a legacy of resilience and care.

Among his family members, his mother’s side boasted a rich sporting history. Jack Milburn, George Milburn, Jim Milburn, and Stan Milburn, all renowned football players, were uncles to his mother. Additionally, Jackie Milburn, a celebrated figure in the world of football for his contributions to Newcastle United and the English national team, stood as a cousin to Jack Milburn.

Throughout the initial stages of his own career, Charlton acknowledged the pivotal role played by his grandfather Tanner and his mother Cissie, attributing a significant portion of his early success to their unwavering support. Meanwhile, his older brother, Jack, initially pursued a career as a miner before shifting gears towards his own successful football journey, notably with Leeds United.
