Tragedy struck in Coatesville when 83-year-old Uley Hines was accused of killing his roommate, Keith Boggs, following a minor argument involving a dog. The verbal dispute reportedly escalated, resulting in Hines allegedly shooting Boggs. Chester County District Attorney Deb Ryan’s Office has charged Hines with first and third-degree murder, possession of a weapon, and possession of an instrument of crime.

The roots of the tragedy lay in a long-standing relationship between Uley Hines and Boggs’ parents. When Keith Boggs needed a place to stay, Hines extended the offer of his residence on Coatesville’s Graham Avenue.

On the evening of Saturday, August 19, around 8:40 PM local time, Coatesville Police Department officers responded to Hines’ residence. They found Boggs lying unconscious on the front steps of the house. Inside the apartment, police heard the cries of a juvenile female. Blood droplets and a bloody footprint were also discovered outside. Initial reports suggested that Boggs had suffered a gunshot wound to the upper chest. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he was sadly pronounced dead.

Chester County District Attorney Deborah Ryan deemed the shooting “unnecessary” and “senseless.” Allegedly stemming from previous clashes over Hines’ dog, the tragic incident underscores the tragic consequences of a minor dispute.

Roxanne, the victim’s sister, expressed her grief, remembering her brother as a “beautiful person” who did not deserve such an end. Boggs leaves behind an 8-year-old daughter. He had lived with Hines for approximately six years. Hines was a long-time friend of the victim’s mother, and their relationship was affectionately described by a cousin as that of an “Uncle.”

A neighbor recounted hearing an argument between the two men, wherein Boggs questioned Hines about the dog’s fate. As Boggs entered the house with the dog, gunshots resonated, followed by Hines’ expletive-laden remarks. The victim was later found lying outside the residence. Hours after the shooting, authorities apprehended the suspect a few blocks away from his home.

DA Ryan acknowledged the prevalence of gun violence across the nation and extended condolences to Boggs’ family and friends. The legal process now seeks to ensure accountability for the devastating loss that has befallen Keith Boggs’ loved ones.
