Reports have emerged that Scottish singer Emeli Sande, 36, has been compelled to postpone her wedding to girlfriend Yoana Karemova, just one year after their engagement. The celebrated artist, who announced her engagement to the classical pianist last September, cited her hectic schedule as the reason for the change in plans.
Emeli, who publicly revealed her membership in the LGBT community six months prior to the engagement, shared with Metro, “We’ve kind of put them on hold until I get this album out and we do the shows this year, but we’ll probably start planning next year or early next year.”

Originally from Bulgaria, Yoana has performed as a concerto soloist across Europe, showcasing her talents that began to flourish at the age of 5 when she first sat on a piano stool. By the age of 11, she gave her debut solo recital, eventually pursuing piano performance studies in Sofia, Bulgaria, and later at Trinity College of Music in London.
Notably, Yoana won the First Prize in the Virtuosi of the Piano International Competition in the Czech Republic in 1995, adding to her list of accolades.
Emeli disclosed their relationship in a heartfelt Instagram post on April 2 last year, expressing gratitude for the support received from her followers. She wrote, “Falling in love with her gave me the strength I needed! Feels so good to be in love, and I feel happier than ever.”
Despite the delay in wedding plans with Yoana, Emeli remains dedicated to her music career. It’s worth noting that Emeli, who proposed to Yoana just six months after publicly coming out as LGBTQ, was previously married to marine biologist Adam Gouraguine. The couple separated in 2014 after over a decade together and exchanging vows in 2012.
