Based on their tastes and requirements, they change their house into the ultimate version of their dream home. Shea and Syd McGee, stars of Netflix’s Dream Home Makeover, began their remodeling careers by posting pictures of their own home redecoration on their Instagram feed. When their art became famous and successful, they founded their own company, Studio McGee, and began receiving commissions.

Their efforts were not in vain, as they are today considered one of the leading renovators in the reality TV remodeling business. Season 4 of Dream Home Makeover consists of six thirty-minute episodes. The series was filmed in several locations in Utah and California. With the Dream Home Makeover series now available on Netflix, here’s everything you need to know about Shea and Syd McGee.

Before appearing on Netflix’s Dream Home Makeover, Syd and Shea McGee were near bankruptcy.

In addition to their Netflix show, the happily married couple for over a decade also own Studio McGee, an interior design business in Salt Lake City, Utah. They have a lucrative social media career besides refurbishing and restoring multi-million dollar homes, having more than 371k followers on their YouTube channel. They share glimpses of their personal lives with their children in addition to blogging about their careers. According to Pop Sugar, the duo initially disliked TV shows after a failed attempt by a production company, forcing them to build their YouTube channel up to their Netflix series.

The couple also didn’t buy their dream home until 2019, having previously lived in rental homes for the previous five years. Shea and Syd have no prior expertise in interior design. Shea is a public relations professional who became interested in design after completing classes at a community college and working as a freelance designer until they founded their own company. Studio McGee was founded in 2014. The couple revealed to People that they almost went bankrupt before their Netflix show. The couple also admitted to not having a backup plan.

“We had to sell items to make a living. It simply gets to the point where things don’t need to go away.”

Their marriage was significantly damaged as a result of their financial situation.

“Money issues can be enough to break two people, and add a new child to the mix…it’s a tough time. There have been many tears shed.”

They had to tighten their belts while Shea attracted customers and Syd took over running the company’s sales division. To make ends meet, the couple had to cut back on eating out and eventually cancel their cable TV and gym subscriptions. They chose to return to Utah from California, where they attended college, met and fell in love, a year later, resenting the financial burden.

“We knew it was less expensive, and we were in a situation where we didn’t have a backup plan.”

In 2014, the couple rented out Studio McGee’s first space, growing their client base and landing some big jobs while documenting the whole process on Instagram. This is the beginning of their adventure to restore their prosperous home. The Dream Home Makeover performers also co-wrote a book called Make Life Beautiful, which will be released in 2020. They have three children, Margot, Wren, and Ivy.
