A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded as a 10-month-old baby named Jacob Crouch lost his life due to the systematic abuse inflicted by his stepfather, Craig Crouch, and the negligence of his mother, Gemma Barton. The jury at Derby Crown Court found both individuals guilty of their roles in Jacob’s death.
The court learned that Jacob had endured severe pain leading up to his passing, and the fatal injury he sustained, which caused peritonitis, could have been survivable had he received immediate medical attention. Tragically, instead of seeking help, the couple tried to cover up their actions and lied to the authorities.
Medical examinations revealed that Jacob had suffered up to 41 rib fractures, indicating multiple assaults over time. Some of these injuries occurred just hours before his death, while others had happened months earlier. The fractures were caused by adult hands squeezing the child, and some previously healed fractures were re-broken in further attacks.
The post-mortem report confirmed that Jacob died from peritonitis, a result of his bowel rupturing, caused by a kick, stamp, or punch. The evidence made it clear that Jacob had been subjected to physical abuse and did not die from natural causes.
After the couple’s arrest, further evidence came to light through their mobile phones, which contained text messages and audio notes revealing their cruel treatment of Jacob. They referred to him as the “devil,” joked about harmful actions, and expressed disturbing views on parenting.
Baby’s Stepfather ‘Craig Crouch’ and mom ‘Gemma Barton’
Throughout the trial, both Craig Crouch and Gemma Barton denied any involvement in Jacob’s death, but the jury did not believe their claims. After four days of deliberation, they returned a guilty verdict for Craig Crouch on the charge of murder and found Gemma Barton guilty of causing or allowing Jacob’s death.
The sentencing for both individuals will take place at Derby Crown Court. Detective Inspector Paul Bullock expressed his profound sadness and sympathy for Jacob’s family, hoping that the verdict will bring them some closure and allow them to cherish the memories of their beloved child.
