In her forthcoming memoir, “The Woman in Me,” pop icon Britney Spears discloses a deeply personal and painful chapter of her life, recounting an abortion she underwent during her relationship with fellow pop star Justin Timberlake in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Excerpts from the book, published in People magazine, reveal that Spears, now 41, considered the pregnancy a surprise but wanted to have the baby. However, at Timberlake’s insistence, she agreed to have an abortion.
In her autobiography, Spears candidly shares, “I loved Justin so much. I always expected us to have a family together one day. But Justin definitely wasn’t happy about the pregnancy. He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young.” She goes on to express that had the decision been solely hers, she would not have chosen the abortion. The experience is described as “one of the most agonizing things I have ever experienced in my life.”
As of now, representatives for Timberlake, aged 42, have not responded to requests for comment regarding the revelations.
Spears and Timberlake, who initially crossed paths as young cast members on television’s “The Mickey Mouse Club,” shared a high-profile relationship that lasted approximately three years during their late teens and early twenties. The couple became tabloid sensations before an abrupt breakup in 2002.
Following their split, Spears faced relentless media scrutiny concerning her virginity, while Timberlake publicly claimed to have been intimate with her. He also released the song “Cry Me a River,” implying that Spears had been unfaithful during their relationship.
In 2021, Timberlake publicly apologized to Spears on social media after a TV documentary highlighted the media’s treatment of her following their split, acknowledging that he had “failed” her.
Subsequently, Spears went on to become a mother to two sons, now aged 18 and 17, with her second husband, Kevin Federline, a singer, and former backup dancer. Their marriage lasted for two years.
In April 2022, Spears announced that she was expecting her third child with then-fiancé Sam Asghari. Unfortunately, the following month, she revealed that she had suffered a miscarriage. The couple wed in June 2022, but Asghari filed for divorce just 14 months later, in August of the same year.

This highly anticipated memoir is released nearly two years after Spears was freed from a 13-year court-ordered conservatorship, which had been established and controlled by her father, Jamie Spears. The conservatorship had governed Spears’ personal life, career, and her $60 million estate from 2008 until it was terminated in November 2021.
The title of the memoir, “The Woman in Me,” seems to reflect a line from the book where Spears articulates, “The woman in me was pushed down for a long time. They wanted me to be wild onstage, the way they told me to be, and to be a robot the rest of the time.” This book promises to provide a candid look into the life of a pop superstar who has faced immense challenges and triumphs throughout her career.
