- Viktor Orban was a founder member of the party ‘Fiatal DemoKraták Szövetsége,’ or the ‘Alliance of Young Democrats,’ better known as ‘Fidesz’. The party was created in March 1988, and he quickly became the spokesman for it.
- Following the fall of communism in Hungary in 1989 and the subsequent transition to multiparty democracy, he was elected to the National Assembly and chaired Fidesz’s parliamentary caucus until 1993.
- During Orbán’s first tenure as Prime Minister, from 1998 to 2002, he led a conservative coalition administration that reduced inflation and the budget deficit, and Hungary joined NATO. From 2002 until 2010, Orbán served as the opposition’s leader.
