A seasoned cyber news reporter claims that a sizable portion of Americans no longer grasp the truth or care about the truth as a result of the internet.
Veteran ABC News reporter Sam Donaldson recounted his 52 years in the media in a lecture hosted by the University of Montana’s Mansfield Center on Tuesday night. He also talked about changes in the media landscape that are not good for a vibrant democracy.

Television was still black and white when he began his journalism career. After he was done, social media and the internet began to demonstrate their dangerous abilities. Donaldson claims that across all, the biggest change has been the proportion of Americans who don’t know the truth but are willing to accept particular points of view.
According to Donaldson, there is a segment of our population that believes in lies and if those lies were exposed, they would become quite angry. Most of the people I watch on cable TV and on personal websites don’t care about the truth. If it can’t be solved, I think it’s very dangerous for the country and worrying.
Donaldson is confused about how Americans can unite to accept shared truths, as they often did before the invention of the internet. His only advice is to get people to read or listen to news from multiple sources.
According to Donaldson, you need to have multiple sources. “While many people now have the opportunity to obtain that information online, they do not. Considering that they are not used to change. How would you tell truth from fiction then?
