Utah teen plunges to death while capturing photos at cliff’s edge

Jonathan Fielding

Moab, Utah – In a heartbreaking incident, 19-year-old Jonathan Fielding from Utah lost his life in a tragic fall while capturing photos with friends at a scenic overlook. The thrill-seeking photographer fell over the edge of Moonscape Overlook, leading to his untimely death, reported KUTV.

Jonathan Fielding, an avid photographer, had recently moved to Utah from Missouri and had embarked on a hiking trip near Moonscape Overlook with two friends. The group intended to take pictures near the cliff’s edge when Fielding, in an attempt to find a better vantage point, lost his footing on unstable ground and plunged over the canyon edge.

Fielding’s family, grappling with the sudden loss, finds solace in the fact that he was “doing what he loved at the time of the accident,” as stated in his obituary. Described as a special and fun-loving individual, Fielding’s family emphasizes that he brought energy and a bright smile to every conversation.

Rebecca Fielding, Jonathan’s sister, drove to Utah after his death to visit the site where the tragic incident occurred. She underscored the deceptive nature of the cliffs, where the ground may seem sturdy but is, in fact, precarious.

Expressing a desire to raise awareness about hiking safety, Rebecca Fielding wrote on Facebook, “My brothers death is not a scam, like some really classy people were suggesting. I was wrong about it being Moab, due to having to find out information from my sister who found out from my dad who found out from my brothers roommate who found out from the roommates brother who was with my brother when he died.”

“I was told it was Moab in a hurried phone call when I first got the news that he had fallen, before rescuers could reach his body and we still had hope he was alive. It was Moon Overlook near Torrey Utah, which is just a couple hours west of Moab. I drove all the way from Missouri to go to the spot. While i was there I was able to call and talk to one off the guys who was with him and see exactly what happened to get closure,” Rebecca added.

She further said, “It was a tragic accident, but Jonathan should be a cautionary tale to anyone who hikes or does photography. Never trust the ground on the edge of a cliff. The rocks may look solid, the ground might seem like it will hold, but it’s still an eroding ticking time bomb. All it takes is one wrong step to dislodge rocks, one moment of unbalance, a trip over a rock, and you can plummet to your death.”

“No view is worth your life. No view is worth the suffering that your family and friends will go through. No view is worth the risk that rescuers face when trying to save people and recover bodies. There was no reason for my brother to die. Please don’t make the same mistakes he did,” She added.

Jonathan Fielding, a former resident of Blue Springs, Missouri, was actively involved in high school activities, competing in pole vaulting and achieving the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts. A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he dedicated his time to community service projects.

Described as a fun-loving and intelligent young man with big dreams, Jonathan’s loved ones remember him not just for his aspirations but for his caring nature and selfless love for others. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up in his honor to support his family during this difficult time.

In the wake of this tragic accident, friends and family remember Jonathan Fielding for the joy he brought to those around him, and the community mourns the loss of a vibrant young soul.
