Tytus Howard, the starting right tackle for the Houston Texans, has undergone hand surgery following an injury sustained during training camp. As a result of this injury, he is expected to have a recovery period of 4 to 6 weeks, potentially allowing him to return for the team’s season opener. This news was confirmed by Texans coach DeMeco Ryans, who mentioned that Howard will be “out for a while” due to the hand injury.

Tytus Howard recently signed a lucrative three-year, $56 million contract extension with the Texans, which included $36.5 million in guaranteed money. However, his plans for the upcoming season were disrupted by the hand injury he suffered during a practice session.

In the previous year (2022), Howard played a significant role for the Texans, starting in 17 games and demonstrating strong performance. He stood out among offensive tackles in ESPN’s pass block win rate, ranking seventh with an impressive rate of 93.1%.

With Tytus Howard sidelined due to his injury, veteran swing tackle George Fant is expected to step in and take on the starting role at right tackle. George Fant had recently been signed by the Texans less than two weeks before Howard’s injury. Fant’s familiarity with the offensive scheme, having played under Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik during his time with the New York Jets from 2020 to 2022, makes him a suitable replacement.

Notably, George Fant showcased his skills in pass protection in 2021, posting a pass block win rate of 89.3% over 15 games. This placed him 31st among tackles for that statistic. Unfortunately, his 2021 season was cut short due to a knee injury that landed him on the injured reserve.

Tytus Howard’s hand injury is the second setback for the Texans’ offensive line in a short span of time. Center Scott Quessenberry suffered a more severe injury, tearing both his ACL and MCL during a practice session. This injury led to Quessenberry being placed on the injured reserve list, further impacting the team’s offensive line composition.
