Portland, Oregon – In a tragic incident on Friday night outside the Lariat Lounge on Southeast Division Street, the Portland community lost a beloved soul, Montrell D. Goss also known as Trell Goss, at the age of 37. Montrell, known as Trell, was shot in a confrontation after leaving the bar, and despite life-saving efforts, he succumbed to a gunshot wound at a local hospital.
Montrell Goss was more than a victim; he was a children’s author, a community icon, and a compassionate spirit dedicated to making the world a better place, particularly for the youth. Born and raised in Portland, Trell was described as an extrovert, friendly, and always engaging with everyone around him. He and his wife moved away from north Portland three years ago, seeking refuge from violence, with a mission to be positive role models for children.
His passion for writing children’s books, featuring characters like Chillin’ the Courageous Coyote, showcased Trell’s commitment to teaching valuable lessons and fostering a sense of courage among youngsters. He often visited schools to read his books, accompanied by a mascot named Triple C. Trell believed in being an example to effect positive change, especially coming from a challenging neighborhood.
Laura Cromwell, who watched Trell grow as a children’s author, remembered him as a peacemaker, a magnetic personality, and a man with a genuine desire to contribute to the community’s well-being. Trell’s impact was not just confined to his literary endeavors; he was known for his generosity, such as buying an ice cream cart to treat kids in the neighborhood.
Mourning his loss, Martae Brown, one of Trell’s cousins, expressed the profound impact Trell had on the community. Brown acknowledged Trell’s role as a Northside Ryda, a writer of over 10 books, and an inspiring individual. Brown pledged to honor Trell’s memory by writing a children’s book and continuing the legacy of standing for the youth.
As the community grieves the loss of Trell Goss, a memorial outside the Lariat Lounge has become a testament to the positive influence he had on the lives of many. Trell will be remembered as a good-hearted soul dedicated to making the city safer and better, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
In the words of Martae Brown, “Til we meet again… Trell Goss. Love, One of your favorite Lil Cousins.”
