He met Steve Mariucci, a former NFL head coach from his hometown when he was a kid. The two attended the same high school and were teammates on soccer, basketball, and track and field teams. After graduating, he was hired as a head coach at Ishpeming High School for one season.
Then, from 1979 to 1983, he was an assistant coach at Northern Michigan University. In September 1983, he was hired as a part-time assistant at Michigan State. In addition, Tom Izzo served as an assistant coach at the University of Tulsa for two months in 1986.
