He met Steve Mariucci, a former NFL head coach from his hometown when he was a kid. The two attended the same high school and were teammates on soccer, basketball, and track and field teams. They were also housemates at Northern Michigan University. He played for his college’s men’s basketball team from 1973 to 1997, breaking the school’s record for minutes played. After graduating, he was hired as a head coach at Ishpeming High School for one season.
Then, from 1979 to 1983, he was an assistant coach at Northern Michigan University. In September 1983, he was hired as a part-time assistant at Michigan State. In addition, Tom Izzo served as an assistant coach at the University of Tulsa for two months in 1986.
