Taylor Swift Is Criticized For Participating In Variety’s Directors On Directors With Martin McDonagh

Taylor Swift has faced disappointment this year after being cast on Variety’s Director on Director show. Netizens flocked to Twitter to condemn the singer, accusing her of undermining other struggling female filmmakers who need more attention. Director on Director is an annual presentation in which famous directors discuss the big films of the year as well as their directing experience.

This year’s directors include pop singer Taylor Swift, who was honored for directing her All Too Well music video, which was published in November. The series, which will air on December 12, will begin with a dialogue between Martin McDonagh and Taylor Swift.

Ramin Setoodeh, co-editor of the journal said:

“Ever since Taylor Swift’s short film ‘All Too Well’ aired in New York last winter, Variety has been impressed with her vision as a filmmaker. We’re thrilled she’s joining James Cameron, Ryan Coogler, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and the year’s most successful and adventurous filmmakers.”

James Cameron (Avatar: The Way of the Water), Robert Rodriguez, Ryan Coogler (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King), Chinonye Chukwu (Till), Tyler Perry (A Jazzman’s Blues), Sarah Polley (Women Talking), Francis Ford Coppola, Joe Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) and other Rian Johnson (A Mystery On Maverick) and Rian Johnson will star in: Mystery On.

However, the majority of individuals were unhappy with Swift’s presence on the roster and have expressed dissatisfaction with Variety’s ruling. Many people criticized Taylor on Twitter, claiming that she only shot a short music video and lacked the professional experience of many years like other filmmakers on the show. One individual claimed to admire Taylor Swift but called the effort ‘crazy’.

Netizens criticized Taylor Swift for allegedly abusing ‘power’ while attending Variety’s Director on Director event.

Taylor received a lot of love and comments from fans and reviewers for her 15-minute music video for All Too Well, which featured actresses Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien. Her directing ability was commended when the short film was released. The singer also revealed the idea at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. People on social media suggested that Taylor was aiming for an Oscar after learning she could be nominated in the short film category at the Academy Awards. As a result, she is joining Direct on Director to solidify her background as a filmmaker.

Some people, including some Taylor Swift fans, were annoyed by her appearance on the show. Their main fear is that Taylor will deprive many of the other filmmakers who need more acclaim and exposure than she does, as well as the chance to show their work on a prominent stage. Another user went on to list female filmmakers for whom the platform could be a huge opportunity if Taylor’s music videos don’t overshadow their work.

Others are also questioning Taylor’s filmmaking background and directing skills. They deemed her completely unfit to speak to an experienced and Oscar-nominated filmmaker like Martin McDonagh. Despite this, some of her followers remained loyal to her and praised her for being put on Director over Director.
