Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems, was born on 11 July 1995 in Lagos, Nigeria, to a Nigerian mother and an English father. Her father abandoned her mother when she was 5 years old, so she was raised by her single mother. She attended Dowen College in Lekki after completing her primary education in Lagos. She then moved to Johannesburg to study Economics at a South African university. Tems grew up in a simple family and discovered his musical talent after joining a local choir. During her childhood, she took her first steps towards becoming a great musician, recording songs with the school choir and practicing playing her brother’s guitar.
