Biography of Tems
Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems, was born on 11 July 1995 in Lagos, Nigeria, to a Nigerian mother and an English father. Her father abandoned her mother when she was 5 years old, so she was raised by her single mother. She attended Dowen College in Lekki after completing her primary education in Lagos. She then moved to Johannesburg to study Economics at a South African university. Tems grew up in a simple family and discovered his musical talent after joining a local choir. During her childhood, she took her first steps towards becoming a great musician, recording songs with the school choir and practicing playing her brother’s guitar. According to a documentary with MU Narratives, she recounts how her music teacher encouraged her to sing in her real voice when she doubted her abilities.

In 2018, Tems quit his job to pursue a music career. She started learning self-production skills on YouTube and on July 18, 2018 she released her debut single, “Mr Rebel”, a song she produced herself. On August 7, 2019, she released the single “Try Me”. In 2020, DJ Edu selected her as one of that year’s “ten artists to watch”. On April 23, 2020, Tems was introduced with Nigerian singer
Davido on the remake of American singer-songwriter Khalid and the single by British electronic music duo Disclosure, “Know Your Worth”.
On September 25, 2020, Tems released her debut extended play, For Broken Ears. It was produced primarily by her, and the single “Damages” from the EP became another follow-up hit of “Try Me”, reaching number one on the Nigerian Apple Music chart and number six. on the then-new TurnTable Top 50 chart, and amassed five million views on YouTube. On 30 October 2020, Tems was featured on the single “Essence” by Nigerian singer Wizkid, from the latter’s fourth studio album, Made in Lagos. On December 14, 2020, Tems was arrested along with Nigerian singer Omah Lay after they performed in a show in Uganda. Uganda’s police agency identified a violation of COVID-19 lockdown protocols as the reason for their arrest, but the two artists felt they were ensnared. Two days later, the Ugandan government released them, apologized for their arrest, and dropped the charges.
