- Teesta Setalvad graduated from high school in 1979 and enrolled in a law school, but she left in order to pursue her degree in philosophy (Honours), which she eventually earned in 1983.
- In 1983, Teesta Setalvad began her career as a journalist. She started working with reputable print journalism organisations like The Daily (India), The Indian Express, and Business Magazine. The media organisations employed her as a columnist to write the news for their audience in Bombay.
- When Teesta Setalvad was sent to cover the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, it was her first significant break as a journalist. She thoroughly covered the occasion, which was really appreciated.
