In a chilling incident shedding light on safety lapses within public transportation, Sarah de Lagarde has bravely shared her horrific ordeal of losing two limbs after being struck by separate trains at High Barnet tube station in North London in September 2022. The incident occurred when de Lagarde slipped on a wet platform, falling into a gap between the platform and a stationary train, resulting in a broken nose and two broken front teeth.
De Lagarde’s nightmare escalated as the train moved, tragically taking her right arm and later her right leg. Despite her desperate cries for help, her pleas went unanswered until 15 minutes later when someone raised the alarm. Emergency services arrived an hour after the incident, delayed by confusion over turning off the power line, hindering paramedics’ efforts to rescue her from under the train.
Now equipped with a robotic arm and prosthetic leg, de Lagarde spoke about her emotional and physical struggles during an interview on “The UK Tonight With Sarah-Jane Mee.” She emphasized that her survival was not mere luck but a call to action, urging for improved safety measures within Transport for London (TfL) networks, which she believes are woefully inadequate.
Statistics from TfL between 2006 and 2018 reveal an average of 16 incidents of people falling between platforms and trains each month. The London Underground, serving two million people daily, operates under TfL since 2003.
De Lagarde raised concerns about the perceived safety measures in place, questioning the effectiveness of CCTV surveillance, the absence of sensors on tracks, and the lack of station staff. In response, Nick Dent, Director of Customer Relations at London Underground, expressed sympathy to de Lagarde and her family. He reassured the public that safety remains their top priority, with ongoing efforts to enhance network safety.
