Sue Kent has loved BBC Gardeners World since she was a child, and she always wanted to be on the popular gardening show.
Sue seized the opportunity to submit a video of her garden when requested by BBC Gardeners World during the pandemic.
Sue from Gower made a big impression on the BBC, and when given the opportunity to host, her wish came true. She has also proven to be a hit with viewers as she recently took home the prestigious Alan Titchmarsh award.
I’ve been watching it since I was knee high and I’ve always wanted to see it. Sue continued: “I used to think I would write to them and ask if they would like to visit my garden, but I never thought that would be enough.
“And when the pandemic hit, I had a lot of time to work on it, so when they asked to submit papers, I reasoned it was now or never. I didn’t anticipate it would lead to this.
Due to limited upper extremities, Sue has always had a passion for gardening and is quite particular about tending to her beautiful collection of plants almost exclusively with her feet.
After her mother took Thalidomide during pregnancy to treat morning sickness, Sue was born with an eight-inch arm, no thumb, and seven fingers—three in each hand. We changed it over the years so I could work in the garden,” added Sue. I used to try to weed on a slope while standing on one leg. I’m the same with my feet as people who use their hands and favor one over the other.
However, Sue doesn’t let her disability stop her, as evidenced by the fact that she recently received the famous Alan Titchmarsh New Talent of the Year award at the annual Garden Media Guild Awards.
Sue has received praise for her contributions to BBC Gardener’s World. According to the BBC, Sue approaches gardening from an angle unfamiliar to many of us but also perfectly relevant, which makes her articles at once engaging, interesting, fun and educational.
Lee Burkhill, a garden designer and horticulture expert, hosted the evening’s presentation of the awards, which took place on Zoom.
Sue’s reaction upon receiving the award was as follows: “I’m so happy to be shortlisted, shocked to win; this is a first satisfaction for me, i have never received an award. The hard learning required to become a presenter is fun, a lot more work than it looks, but totally satisfying and enjoyable.
