Rittman, Ohio – In the early hours of Friday morning, tragedy struck on Interstate 77 in Independence, resulting in a fatal accident claiming the lives of two individuals. The incident involved a collision with a semitrailer near the Chestnut Road bridge, as confirmed by authorities.
Christopher Davis from Broadview Heights was operating a 2017 Ford hatchback southbound on I-77 when the vehicle veered off course, crashing into the median wall before moving into the right lane. A 2022 Chevrolet hatchback was stationed in the right lane ahead of the Ford, although it wasn’t initially part of the collision. The circumstances regarding its presence in that position remain unclear, as reported by law enforcement.

Johnny Brooks, aged 29 and hailing from Wadsworth, along with Gertrude Stutler, aged 32 and a resident of Rittman, tragically lost their lives in the accident. Reports indicate that Davis, Brooks, and Stutler exited their vehicles and were near the road when a 2018 Freightliner, driven by Paramjit Nijjer of Twinsburg, approached in the far-right lane. Regrettably, the semitrailer collided with Brooks, Stutler, and Davis, as well as the two stationary cars. Subsequently, the Freightliner careened off the road, striking the guardrail and overturning.
The Cuyahoga County medical examiner’s office disclosed that a bystander found Brooks on the road, while Stutler was discovered nearby. Davis, the driver involved in the initial collision, sustained critical injuries and was rushed to MetroHealth Medical Center. Nijjer, the semitrailer driver, suffered minor injuries in the incident.
Following the accident, Interstate 77 was closed for several hours for investigation and cleanup, with the lanes eventually reopening at 7:30 a.m.
