Sabrina Peckham of Florida passes away after Pinellas Co. alligator attack: Obituary

Pinellas County, Florida – In a heart-wrenching incident that unfolded on Friday, September 22, 2023, tragedy struck when 41-year-old Sabrina Peckham lost her life in a horrifying alligator attack. The incident occurred at approximately 1:45 p.m. while Sabrina was taking a leisurely walk along McKay Creek in unincorporated Largo, Florida.

The dreadful discovery was made by a local resident who stumbled upon a gruesome scene. He observed a 13-foot alligator holding what appeared to be a human torso in its jaws. Frantically, he attempted to deter the alligator by hurling rocks at it, but the massive reptile simply swam away, taking its grim cargo with it.

Immediately, the resident raced back to his home and alerted his mother, who wasted no time in notifying the Largo Fire Department and the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office. A call was also swiftly placed to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, requesting the dispatch of an alligator trapper.

Sabrina’s  daughter Breauna Dorris shared a post on facebook. She stated that:

The past 24 hours have been filled with grief and sorrow and unbearable pain for our family. I’m posting this to put rumors to rest and ask for everyone’s help.

My mother, Sabrina Peckham was the victim of the alligator attack at McCay Creek (rainbow village). Please understand that we do not have all information yet as the medical examiners report is not yet finished. Some details I would like to share is that my mother did not “taunt” the alligator as some are saying in the news outlets comments. My mother was apart of the homeless population that lived in the nearby wooded area. It is believed that she may have been walking to or from her camp site near the creek in the dark and the alligator attacked from the water. Please do not speak on what you don’t know. No matter how you put it, no one deserves to die like this.

We will be using the funds raised from the gofund me to put my mother to rest in our family plot. My mother only being 41, we had not expected to do this anytime soon. We expected to have many many more years with her. Unfortunately god has called her home sooner than our hearts were ready.

To my mother: I love you more than I ever expressed, I miss you more than you’ll ever know and I pray that you are looking down over me and your grandchildren. Please protect us. I’m so sorry this happened to you. I pray you are at peace and you are no longer struggling or hurting. I pray you found momo and pop and you all are watching down from above.

I am doing my best to get back to everyone that has reached out and or given their condolences. I appreciate each and everyone of you. Our family needs you now more than ever. If you have any questions, please message me and I will try and get back to you as soon as possible.

‼️please share, donate, pray‼️

Upon arrival, the trapper made valiant efforts to capture the aggressive 13-foot alligator, but the situation escalated, necessitating the use of lethal force to subdue the animal. Following the alligator’s demise, divers successfully retrieved the remains. While there have been unconfirmed reports of additional body parts, no concrete evidence has surfaced to support these claims.

The responsibility of identifying the deceased and determining the cause of death now falls upon the medical examiner. The victim has been officially identified as Sabrina Peckham, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
