Roy Exum News
America’s horse reform politics came to the fore at the glitzy Genesis Hollywood Awards Saturday night — not once, but twice. But among Hollywood stars, you may not notice the hardworking, horse-riding journalists.
The Genesis Awards, established in 1986 and supported by the Humane Society of the United States, give Hollywood celebrities who have a favorite relationship with animal-related causes the opportunity to wear pants. shirts and stroll the red carpet as they honor each other and the media to raise public awareness of issues related to the treatment of animals.
Carrie Ann Inaba, a judge on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, served as the host of the event, and the list of attendees was impressive: Robert Colbert? Check. Plan $ha? Check. Grey’s Anatomy? Discovery network? They both won for their contributions to raising awareness about animal cruelty.
A number of other dedicated news producers and journalists have also taken action to stem the ailment of walking horses in Tennessee. Yes, there is the magnificent Tennessee walking horse among dogs, cats, whales, and almost extinct animals. Sadly, because rules aimed at protecting horses from abuse didn’t go into effect, Walking Horses made the news.
Beatrice, the adorable dog from the sitcom Modern Family, made an impromptu transition to the ugly look of piles of cushions and leash.
Chattanoogan, a daily newspaper in Chattanooga, Tennessee, publishes articles by Roy Exum. He won a Hollywood award, beating out second-place finisher and New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof.
About 24 columns have now been written by Roy Exum advocating for an end to equine pain in the walking horse industry and revealing the political and social frameworks upon which deception trainers rely to perpetuate cruelty.
No doubt many Walking Horse owners have read Chattanoogan. Many of the newspaper’s sponsors certainly have some connection to the world of walking horse shows. But Roy Exum’s columns keep popping up and remain brutally honest.
Roy Exum actually issued his most recent call to action today, perfectly timed with the publication of this piece. The abusive “star” in the ABC’s secret video, trainer Jackie McConnell, was found guilty of violating the federal Horse Protection Act last year but was released from prison.
Meanwhile, he will face new state charges due to Tennessee’s revised definition of animal cruelty as a felony. And there is a chance he will visit this time.
