Roman Zaragoza Career
Zaragoza grew up in New York City and received a varied upbringing. Who is the father of Roman Zaragoza, a common question? Gregory Zaragoza is a famous actor and Shirley is his mother. He identifies himself as a mixture of races, taking into account his Akimel O’otham or Mexican descent on his father’s side and his Japanese and Taiwanese origins on his mother’s side. Zaragoza’s interest in theatre, film and television was nurtured from an early age by Shirley Zaragoza, a university management professor, and Gregory Zaragoza, a brilliant actor.
His experience watching his father play in the 1999 Broadway production of “Annie Get Your Gun” in the famous Bernadette Peters is one of his earliest memories. Zaragoza’s family moved to Hell’s Kitchen when he was nine years old. He would take the subway to school, passing by all the famous Broadway plays, which would have a significant impact on his future career.
Zaragoza’s parents chose to move to southern California on the West Coast when he was 11 years old so he could continue acting, dance, singing and improv classes. When Zaragoza was 15 years old, he started acting with Native Voices in Autry’s studio. At the time, Native Voices was the only professional Native American theater company.
When he was 18, he performed in Frank Kaash Katasse’s “They Don’t Talk Back” at Indigenous Songs at Autry and La Jolla Playhouse. He played a hugely important role as Nick, a troubled teenage Tlingit poet. His professional trajectory changed at this point. It was here that he first met Randy Reinholz, a man who had a great influence on his life and helped Zaragoza get the Indigenous Voice piece, “Off the Rails”, selected to perform at the Festival. Shakespeare Oregon.
California State University Northridge awarded Zaragoza a degree in film industry. After graduating, he continued to actively participate in the CSUN American Indian Student Union.
