Ottawa is grieving the loss of a true hero and advocate as former Ottawa police officer, Sergeant Robin Easey, passed away at the age of 70. His death was announced by Ride for Robin, a heartfelt post on social media that conveyed the deep sadness felt by the community.
Sergeant Robin Easey was not just a police officer; he was a symbol of resilience and unwavering determination. Despite facing immense challenges, he continued to serve his community with unwavering dedication. In 1984, Easey, alongside his colleague Ralph Erfle, was shot during an investigation at the Bayshore Shopping Center. Although both men survived, Easey suffered severe health problems, leading to blindness and limited mobility.
His indomitable spirit shone through, even in the face of adversity. Confined to a wheelchair, Easey found pride in wearing his police uniform, attending police-related events, and representing the Ottawa Police at the Canadian Police Memorial on Parliament Hill, where he paid tribute to fallen officers. Rising through the ranks to become a sergeant in the Ottawa Police Service, Easey became a staunch advocate for the rehabilitation and assistance of trauma sufferers.
Easey’s impact extended far beyond his police duties. He actively contributed to the Wings of Phoenix’s fundraising efforts, enabling families and individuals in need to afford essential rehabilitation procedures. His dedication was further evident in events like the Ride for Robin and the Sergeant Robin Easey Charity Golf Tournament, initiatives that made a significant difference in the lives of many.
Ride for Robin shared a post on fb on the death of Robin:
It is with great sadness that I am announcing the death of Sargent Robin Easey.Robin was instrumental in the funding raising efforts of the Wings of Phoenix and was an active member of the Board of Directors.Over the years the Sargent Robin Easey Charity Golf Tournament and the Ride for Robin raised money so as to be able to purchase rehabilitation treatments for individuals and families who would otherwise not have had access to treatments.Robin was a wonderful man. He was kind, very funny and a proud husband, father and grandfather. The world was a better place with Robin in it.Deepest condolences to his entire family.Any notes of condolences on this page will be shared with family at a later date.
In 1988, Easey founded Robin’s Blue Circle, a support group for police personnel. This enduring program, which bears his name, has provided invaluable peer support to officers who have experienced trauma in the line of duty. Membership in this exclusive group was a testament to the shared experiences of those who had been shot by a police officer or had been involved in a similar incident during their duties.
Sergeant Robin Easey’s legacy lives on not just in the annals of Ottawa’s police history but also in the hearts of the people he touched. His courage, compassion, and unyielding determination have left an indelible mark on the community he served. As Ottawa mourns the loss of a true hero, they celebrate his life, his advocacy, and the profound impact he had on the lives of many.
