Saskatoon, Canada – Robert Patrick Emes, a beloved father, son, friend, and esteemed member of the legal profession, unexpectedly passed away in Vancouver on September 6, 2023, at the age of 38. The news of his passing has left friends and family in mourning, cherishing the memory of a remarkable individual. Robert, fondly known as Rob, was a resident of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, where he left an indelible mark through his compassion, wisdom, and profound kindness.
Born in Calgary on February 6, 1985, Rob moved to Vancouver with his family at the age of five, where he attended Lord Kitchener School, forming friendships that would last a lifetime. He continued his education at Prince of Wales High School before returning to Calgary at the age of 14. Rob graduated from Alternative High School in 2003, achieving the Governor General’s Academic Medal (Bronze). During his formative years, he dedicated his time to volunteering at Food Not Bombs and embraced the vibrant music scene, creating enduring connections.
Following high school, Rob embarked on a journey of adventure, hitchhiking across the country and then returning to Calgary in 2005 to pursue becoming a journeyman carpenter. He successfully accomplished this in Saskatoon in 2012, proudly using his skills to contribute to projects like Habitat for Humanity (2017) as a volunteer carpenter.
Driven by his passion for learning and serving the community, Rob transitioned to academia, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Economics with Great Distinction from the University of Saskatchewan in 2017. He was awarded the University of Saskatchewan President’s Medal the same year. Driven by a desire to effect greater change, Rob pursued law school and graduated in 2019, earning the Law Society of Saskatchewan Bronze Medal. During his time at law school, he made meaningful contributions as a student editor for the Saskatchewan Law Review (2017/18) and volunteered at Community Legal Assistance Services for Saskatoon Inner City (CLASSIC).
With a deep sense of purpose and fulfillment, Rob pursued his legal career, articling at McKercher LLP and later becoming an integral part of their team. He often expressed that he had found his true calling in the law, and his work at McKercher LLP allowed him to create a meaningful impact.
However, his true joy stemmed from being a devoted father to his son, Noah. Whether it was coaching baseball, enjoying outdoor adventures, indulging in music, or simply spending quality time, Rob treasured every moment with Noah.
