Coquitlam, British Columbia – A heart-wrenching tragedy unfolded on Friday morning in Coquitlam, where one officer lost his life, and two others were injured during a devastating shooting incident. The fallen hero has been identified as Constable Rick O’Brien, a dedicated member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) based in Maple Ridge, British Columbia. He was 51 years old.
The sorrowful incident occurred while Constable Rick O’Brien and his team were in the midst of executing a search warrant at a residence on Glen Drive. An altercation ensued between the officers and an individual during the operation, resulting in injuries to several officers and the discharge of firearms, ultimately leading to the man being shot.
Eric Woodward shared his grief on the death of Rick O’Brien. He stated in his post that:

Constable O’Brien was a Willoughby resident, calling Langley home.This senseless tragedy has deeply touched us all. It reminds us of the risk those that protect us and serve our community face each day. It reminds us of the bravery and courage our RCMP officers have in the line of duty. My heart goes out his family and loved ones in the face of such deep loss.
Constable Rick O’Brien was a devoted member of the RCMP, serving at the Pitt Meadows detachment in Maple Ridge, British Columbia. He held a position within the Uniformed Community Response Unit (UCRU), a community-oriented policing unit dedicated to addressing the needs of youth, homeless individuals, those with mental health concerns, and the First Nations community. Additionally, UCRU provided proactive support to general duty officers.
The entire community is left in mourning over the loss of Constable Rick O’Brien, a dedicated and compassionate officer who worked tirelessly to serve and protect the community. The incident serves as a painful reminder of the risks that law enforcement officers face daily.
