Police officer & utility worker Paul Trace of Waltham dies on Totten Pond Road accident

WALTHAM, MA – The city of Waltham is grieving the loss of a dedicated public servant, Police Officer Paul Tracey, who tragically lost his life in an accident during a construction detail on Wednesday evening. The incident, which also claimed the life of a National Grid utility worker, has left the community in shock and mourning.

The accident occurred just after 4 p.m. on Totten Pond Road, involving multiple vehicles. Paul Tracey, a 28-year veteran of the Waltham Police Department, was one of the victims who succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. The driver, identified as Simon, was involved in a collision that resulted in devastating consequences.

The sequence of events leading to the tragedy included Simon’s pickup truck attempting a U-turn after initially pulling to the side, colliding with a jeep traveling behind. The truck then continued down the road, striking both Officer Paul Tracey and a National Grid utility worker. The suspect, armed with a knife, allegedly stole a Waltham police vehicle and fled before crashing on Winter Street. Simon was subsequently apprehended and faces charges of two counts of manslaughter and armed robbery.

Paul Tracey, aged 58, was not just a police officer but a pillar of the community, serving Waltham for 28 years with dedication and compassion. Described as an honest and kind officer, Tracey fought for justice and stood up for the underdog. Beyond his professional duties, he was a loving spouse and a devoted father who imparted values of compassion, bravery, and responsibility to his children.

Known for creating a warm and loving household, Tracey’s impact extended beyond the precinct. His friendships with colleagues fostered unity and respect, and his eagerness to assist made him a popular figure. As Waltham mourns the loss of this exemplary public servant, his legacy of love, service, and companionship will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
