It could have been a catastrophic failure,” chuckled Peter Doig. Anxious about his upcoming exhibition at the Courtauld Institute of Art is the 63-year-old painter. Few living artists are deemed worthy enough for their works to be exhibited alongside Cézannes, Gauguins, Manets, Monet and Renoirs in the prestigious London gallery.
The Scottish-born artist continued, “I know Frank Auerbach has exhibited his construction paintings there. Admittedly, that was 13 years ago. Courtauld’s temporary gallery, named Denise Coates Exhibition Gallery after the millionaire founder Bet365, has only featured major exhibitions by deceased artists since it reopened in end of 2021 after a £57 million renovation. Van Gogh arrived first, followed by Edvard Munch and Henry Fuseli last.
He may not need to worry. No matter what you think of Van Gogh, Munch or Fuseli, not a single one of their paintings ever brought in £5.7m at auction while they were still alive. This happened in 2007 when Doig’s White Canoe, estimated to have fetched £1 million, was sold for a sum that temporarily elevated Doig to Europe’s most expensive living painter. It was not that he saw the money, but that Charles Saatchi was the rightful owner of the painting. The transaction, which Doig sees as a sign of a deranged art market, has helped build his reputation while dispelling accusations that the artwork is dead.

Doig, a notorious deadline violator, did not complete the paintings for the exhibition, which increased the risk. He looked as tired as anyone who had to stay up until 4am as he coughed and stammered during the interview at his studio and home in east London. To better focus on the eight to ten paintings he hopes to display, he sent his second wife, Parinaz Mogadassi, and their three young children on a trip to Paris.
He complained, “I cough constantly because of the smoke.” Paint fumes have long been a health hazard in the workplace; Doig suffers from frequent sinus congestion from the diluents he takes, and working in a workshop with windows closed during the cold London winters only makes things worse.
